• Xinhua: China defends Team Synchronised Swimming title at Guangzhou Asiad

  Foshan, November 20 – Reigning champions Chinese Synchronised Swimming Team cemented their dominance in Asia by defending their team title at the Guangzhou Asiad here on Saturday.

  The Chinese overshadowed the rest of field with their elegance and difficulty, taking the title at 192.000 points, while Japan finished second in 186.125 and DPR Korea third in 173.000.

  Last time in Doha, the Chinese beat their strongest rivals Japanese, marking a breakthrough for Chinese synchronised swimming and an end of Japan’s unbeaten run at the Asiad as Japan had won every gold medal before.

  This time in Guangzhou, the Chinese team met no challenge as they took a convincing lead in both Technical and Free Routine.

  “I felt very, very happy for winning this title. In the past few years, we have been gradually recognised by referees,” said Zhang Xiaohuan, the coach of the Chinese team.

  In the past four years, the Chinese team grew in fast pace as they clinched the bronze at Beijing Olympics and the World Cup silver in September.

  The team gold is a second for China in Guangzhou Asiad Synchronised Swimming after twin sisters Jiang Wenwen and Jiang Tingting won the duet on Friday. China are also tipped as the hot favourites for Sunday’s combination.

  “We had set sights on three gold medals before coming to Guangzhou. I think we can reach the goal as long as we perform normally,” said Wang Na, another coach of Chinese team.
